Our History
Jim and Janie Brown opened Brown’s Food Center, in November 28, 1978 in Hackberry, LA. In 1983 they expanded the store from 3600 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft to a full size supermarket. In 1991, Jim’s bother Pat Brown and his wife Angela opened Brown’s Market and Deli in Cameron, LA. In January of 2000, Jim and Pat collectively purchased a convenience store, Cam Mart Shell, also located in Cameron, LA. Then on February 14, 2005, Jim and Pat opened Brown’s Neighborhood Market on Nelson Road in Lake Charles, LA.
Unfortunately on September 24, 2005, Hurricane Rita wreaked havoc on Cameron Parish. Rita destroyed Cam Mart Shell and Brown’s Market and Deli and caused Brown’s Neighborhood Market in Lake Charles to suffer great losses. Due to this lose they decided to relocate Brown’s Neighborhood Market to Grand Lake, LA and built a new 15,000 sq ft supermarket that opened on August 29, 2007.
In February 2008 Brown’s Food Center in Hackberry was completely remodeled, only to be hit by Hurricane Ike on September 13, 2008. Hurricane Ike flooded the store with 18 inches of mud and water. Clean up was very difficult, but THANKS to the hard work and dedication of our employees and the community, we were able to temporarily open and serve the needs of others. The store was back in full operation by October, 2008. Thankfully, Brown’s Neighborhood Market did not experience any damage from Hurricane Ike.
Currently Jim and Janie run Brown’s Food Center with their daughter Jamie and sons Chris and Brian, while Pat and Angela run Brown’s Neighborhood Market with their son Patrick and daughters Amaris and Marissa.
